Humans are interesting creatures. They have days for everything! On October 1 alone there are several special days:
- International Day of Older Persons
- International Coffee Day
- World Vegetarian Day
I was curious about these days, especially the first one, since I recently talked to my Grandma Masha and she is getting over a bad cold. International Day of Older Persons was started in 2014 to prevent age discrimination. International Coffee Day was started in 2015 to celebrate and promote coffee. World Vegetarian Day started in 1977 in North America and was made an international day the year after that.
Some of these days seem to be more marketing techniques and some are about real issues. But it seems that you probably won’t drink any more coffee or eat more vegetables on International Days than you would on a regular day, and you should treat older ones well every day of the year to prevent discrimination.
Of course, I don’t mean to minimize the positive effects these special days could have for humans. Bears don’t have any special days so this is still a new concept for me. Do you have a special day that you like to commemorate? And more importantly, how do you decide what to do on October 1?
I think I’ll call my Grandma Masha while I drink a cup of coffee and have a nice plate of fruit and bamboo leaves.
