The idea floated around all winter. Cheryl, one of Spectacled Bear Publishing’s friends, mentioned it every so often. And every so often again!
“You need a puppet of your logo,” she said. “Kids will love it.”
Of course they would, I mentally agreed. But I didn’t have the time or the talent to make such a puppet. And I certainly knew we couldn’t buy one that looked just like our logo, because that bear is one of a kind.
Yes, there’s a spectacled bear in the animal kingdom, but our logo bear doesn’t look anything like it. On purpose. Ours is stylized and very round and very black. He wears turquoise glasses too.
So I agreed with my friend that it was a great idea, but I didn’t do anything about it. Next thing I knew she and another friend, Debbie, went to JoAnn Fabrics, found a pattern to adapt, purchased fabric – black velvet for the body, white satin for the ears, and pink fleece for the mouth – and went to work.
Here is a picture of the pattern and the fabric. The real thing is still a work in progress, but he is going to be 29 inches tall with a moveable mouth and a twinkle in his eye. I’ll keep you posted on the progress.
